The risks of cooling with water
Cooling is of course possible with water. Water cools, but… it also conducts. So there will be a short circuit. In addition, the reaction of water on batteries can lead to explosive hydrogen gas. Extinguishing batteries with water is therefore not without risks. Also, due to its low viscosity, water passes quickly between the cells and a lot of it is needed to have any effect. Often this quantity is not available (in time) and the polluted water ends up in surface water, unfortunately resulting in a lot of environmental damage.

Why is refrigeration so important?
Cooling is necessary to stop thermal runaway skipping between cells or between battery packs. If cooling is too short, the cell will re-ignite again. In addition, cooling is of great importance in reducing the explosiveness of the gases released during a battery fire (deflagration). The lower the temperature of the gases, the lower the chance of – and the impact of – deflagration. Regular extinguishing foam does not work. It will initially knock down the flames, but the foam blanket forms an insulating layer that will cause the temperature to rise again. Want to know more about the risks of battery fires?
